The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has given reasons for picking Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, as his running mate for the 2023 presidential election.
He gave the reasons in his remarks at the unveiling of Okowa as his running mate at the PDP National Headquarters, Wadata Plaza, Wuse Abuja, on Thursday.
Okowa and his Rivers State counterpart, Nyesom Wike, were the two governors speculated to be considered for the slot.
Atiku begins by, once more, commending the great Party for organizing and concluding, arguably, the best and rancor-free Convention, which produced Atiku as the flag-bearer for the next year’s Presidential Election.
He also commends his fellow aspirants in that contest and thanks to them for their sportsmanship and that they put up spirited fights because they cared and care for the country.
Atiku added that party unity is critical not only for them to prosecute a winning campaign but also to provide good governance that the country seriously deserves and that the people earnestly yearn for.
He also reveals that with the convention behind them, they have arrived at the stage for me to pick a Running Mate because it is a joint ticket and that he is very happy to announce that he has reached a decision on that.
In arriving at the decision, Atiku said that he held wide consultations with various stakeholders in the party including party Governors, the National Working Committee, the Board of Trustees, and other leaders to seek their input and their wisdom.
In these consultations, he made clear that his running mate would have the potential to succeed him at a moment’s notice, that is, a President-in-waiting.
