The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres has visited the Borno capital, Maiduguri, where he met Boko Haram victims and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

Guterres had landed in Nigeria on Tuesday.

The chief who consoled the victims and IDPs, expressed UN’s commitment to ensure their welfare remain a top priority.

Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Zulum briefed Guterres on the humanitarian crisis and thanked the world body for its efforts over the years.

Prof. Zulum who said the IDPs had stayed for several years in camps and were eager to return to homes which are yet to be reconstructed, appealed for more UN support in the ongoing rehabilitation, reconstruction and resettlement of the IDPs.

Reports say Guterres could not make his scheduled visit to the border town of Banki due to time factor.

It is the first visit by the UN secretary-general to Nigeria since his appointment.

The visit is part of his annual Ramadan solidarity visits to nations.
