 School Re-Opening: Oyo NLC Backs Governor Makinde

The Oyo State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Bayo Titilola-Sodo has thrown his weight behind the planned gradual reopening of Schools on Oyo State, saying Students cannot continue to remain at home forever.

Comrade Titilola-Sodo who stated this while participating on the BCOS Television Breakfast Current Affairs Programme, AM120, on Wednesday, June 24, 2020, said having assessed the level of compliance with Coronavirus Guidelines on Schools reopening, the reopening schedule announced by the State Government would not jeopardize or endanger the lives of pupils as soon as they return to Schools.

He said the organised Labour: NLC, Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) was actively engaged and involved before the announcement on reopening was made by the State Government.

The NLC Chairman said: “If we evaluate the preventive measures put on place and we believe it is not sufficient, then the onus is on us to offer advice; why don’t you have this, why don’t you take it up to that level? It is only when Government refuses to listen that there should be noise.”

He said parents and guradians should not entertain any fear because the State Government has put in place several preventive measures to ensure safe teaching and learning environment for the Students who are in terminal classes who are scheduled to return to Schools on Monday, July 6, 2020.

It would be recalled that the State COVID-19 Task Force had, on Tuesday, June 23, 2020, modified the resumption date for Primary 6, Junior Secondary School 3 and Senior Secondary School 3 Students in the State, after a review of preparedness of the Schools ahead of the planned resumption.

“By the new arrangement,teachers are to resume to the schools on Monday June 29 while students in critical classes will resume a week later on July 6”,the Task Force stated in a press release issued at the end of the 2 two and a half-hour meeting in Ibadan.

The NLC chairman who commended the state governor,Engineer Seyi Makinde for approving hazard allowance for health workers who are on the frontline in the fight against COVID-19 advised workers to always observe the COVID -19 protocols.

“Workers are being implored to take personal responsibility to protect the society from contracting the dangerous virus”,he said.
