Mikel Arteta highlights ‘big concern’ after Liverpool win

Mikel Arteta admits he does not know if he will be handed the funds he requires to accelerate his Arsenal rebuilding project and concedes that a potential lack of spending power represents a ‘big concern’. The Gunners boss masterminded a rare Arsenal victory over Liverpool at the Emirates on Wednesday with his much changed side benefiting from the errors committed by Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker. But while Arsenal’s hopes of qualifying for Europe next season remain intact, Arteta acknowledged that he can only partially bridge the gap to this season’s runaway champions with hard work and commitment alone.

The Spaniard was restricted to making just two loan signings in January and although Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares have now joined the club on a permanent basis, the Arsenal squad remains in need of major surgery, while doubts persist over the future of captain and top goalscorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Arteta spoke before the game about the need to follow Liverpool’s recruitment model, but after watching his team bounce back from Sunday’s north London derby defeat he again underlined his need for a fresh influx of quality players, if he is to take the club forward

There is no magic, you need to improve with quality, quality players in the squad. And you need bigger squads to compete in this competition and this is the challenge.’ On whether he faces a similar task to the one Arsene Wenger was assigned when he took charge of the club 24 years ago, Arteta added: ‘I think the context is different I think the competition in the country is much harder than what it was before.
