It is now a punishable offence for okada riders to carry two passengers and tricyclists to carry passengers in the front.
The PRO of Oyo State Road Transport Management Agency (OYRTMA), Mrs Oluwatoyin Oyekunle said the law has been in existence since December 2019, noting that there’s sensitization jingles to let the drivers of okadas and tricycles know that it is now a law.
Mrs Oyekunle who disclosed this while featuring on BCOS Radio Programme, ‘Gbarada’, said it is not right for tricyclists to carry passengers in the front because it is not often convenient for them to use gear.
Her pair on the programme who is the President of Oyo State chapter of Motorcycle Transport Union of Nigeria (MOTUN), Comrade Yetunde Alabi, urged the State Government to give them four months before the bill is passed to law.
She noted that most tricyclists and motorcycle riders obtained loans to purchase their bikes and tricycles, saying they’ll need little time to complete the payment with comfort.
Comrade Alabi emphasized that members of MOTUN are not allowed to drink alcohol or misbehave, adding that they all have Identity cards and use yellow jackets.
Oyo MOTUN Chairperson implore the Government to empower them in many ways like facilitating loans, buying okada or marwa for the Union with easy payment procedure.
PRO OYRTMA appreciated the administration led by Governor Seyi Makinde for purchasing some equipment for OYRTMA to detect the percentage of alcohol any driver drinks in order not to cause accident on the road; noting that there is a Mobile Court that will give judgement, fine or jail term to the offenders.
She also emphasized that okada riders and tricycle operatives should detest from carrying passengers that does not go the same route; soliciting the support of the populace in order to enforce the law in the State, that is, commuters should not sit in front of tricycles or two passengers on okada.
She urged the okada drivers, tricyclists or micra not to increase the fare because of the law; saying if OYRTMA officials collect bribe from motorists, people should call these numbers: 08066887556 or 08114390097.
On the issue of micro busses, Mrs Oyekunle said micro bus has come to stay in Oyo State and that it is arriving batch by batch.
She added that there is an emergency team in OYRTMA where Governor Seyi Makinde purchased Ambulances for the Agency in cases of emergency; denying the report that the Agency does not collect N50,000 from any offender.
The Agency’s PRO advised tricyclists to remove the iron at the back of their tricycles henceforth because it is now a law that no tricyclists should use iron at the back of their tricycles.
