The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila has said that the current security challenges in the country are threats to the foundations of Nigeria as a nation.
The Speaker, however, noted that the Federal Government of Nigeria has responded to the challenges.
He said the Government has taken necessary measures such as recruiting personnel for Security Agencies and increasing funding for the Police and the Military.
The speaker stated this when he delivered a paper at the School of Oriental Studies, London, as part of his official visit to the UK.
He said the Nigerian Government has responded to the reality of the present challenges by also acquiring weapons and systems designed to give the security agencies an advantage.
The Speaker said after the 9th House resumed, “the scope of our challenges was evident, matched only by our confidence that we would do what was required to overcome those difficulties and deliver the dividends of democracy for our people.”
According to him, the House understood that the best dividend of democracy is a just society, where individual rights are recognised and respected, where citizens have the freedom to dream big dreams and the social resources and infrastructure to achieve those dreams.
He noted that with the support of his other colleagues across the African continent, he convened the first Conference of Speakers of African Parliaments as a platform for continental parliamentary cooperation and coordination that will allow them to try to change this dynamic.
