The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has deregistered a total of 74 political parties and reduced the total number of parties to 18.
The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday.
Prof. Yakubu said that 75 parties who didn’t meet the requirements of INEC where deregistered, however, one of the parties went to court and this reduced the number of deregistered parties to 74.
The development has reduced the number of registered political parties in Nigeria to 18.
The 18 political parties are Accord Party, Action Alliance, African Action Congress, African Democratic Congress, All Progressives Congress, All Progressives Grand Alliance and Allied Peoples Movement.
Others are Labour Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party, National Rescue Movement, Peoples Democratic Party, Peoples Redemption Party, Social Democratic Party, Young Progressives Party, and Zenith Labour Party.
