Gunmen has attacked the Nigerian Correctional Services Centre in Owerri, the Imo State Capital and freed 1,844 inmates.
The Armed Men were said to have raided the Prison facility from 1:00am till 3:00am on Monday, April 5, 2021.
They also razed the Imo State Police Command Headquarters in Owerri and burnt almost every vehicle within the Command’s premises.
Imo State Police Spokesman, Mr Orlando Ikeokwu confirmed the attack, revealing that the attackers broke into the Prison facility explosives and freed the inmates.
Also confirming the attack, the Public Relations Officer of Nigerian Correctional Service, Mr Francis Enobore, in a statement in Abuja said 1,844 inmates were set free by the invaders.
He however explained that as at the last count, six inmates voluntarily returned to the facility, while 35 inmates refused to escape.
Mr Enobore said the attackers stormed the facility at about 2:15a.m in large numbers in several Hilux Pick-Up Vans and Sienna Buses, armed with sophisticated weapons and immediately engaged the Security Personnel on duty in a fierce gun battle
