The Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19 has asked Northern Governors and Emirs to suspend Durbar activities to prevent the spread of Coronavirus.
The Federal Government’s Committee made this known in a statement by its Chairman and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha, on Sunday, July 18, 2021.
Durbar is a common event in Northern cities and communities with colourful parades of the Emirs and their entourage on horses.
Mr Mustapha said the recommendation followed the confirmation of the Delta variant of COVID-19 and the rising number of infections and hospitalisation in the country.
The Committee also recommends the decentralisation of eid prayer to neighbourhood Friday prayer mosques (outdoor) and observation of limitations on all indoor gatherings as preventive measures for a safe Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
