Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki, has pardoned 173 inmates across correctional centres in the state in line with the Federal Government’s directive to decongest the centres across the country as part of measures in containing the Coronavirus.
Obaseki’s administration also gave relief materials to the released inmates to cushion the effects of the virus.
48 of the inmates were freed from Oko centre, 108 from old Benin centre,12 from Ubiaja centre and four from Auchi centre.
Controller of Nigeria Correctional Service, Edo command, Joseph Usendiah, while kicking off the release yesterday, April 24, 2020, in Benin, said admonished the freed inmates to be law abiding as it is the only way to appreciate the government.
Usendiah also admonished residents of the state, especially the youths, to always shun violence and criminal activities, while meaningfully contributing to societal development.
