A bullion van moving from Mbaise to Owerri was attacked by unknown gunmen in Imo state.

It was gathered that the incident occurred about 02:10 p.m. at Ogbor Nguru, Nwankwo in Aboh Mbaise LGA in the state.

An eyewitness said the unknown gunmen double-crossed the van and shot sporadically at it, with the thought that it was loaded and conveying cash.

As a result, the van tumbled severally as the driver with two other persons tried to escape at high speed.

The driver of the bullion van escaped after the van tumbled severally and ran into about four different vehicles packed at the spot where it happened, smashing the vehicles as well as destroying the windows, doors, and windscreens of the vehicles.

“The driver of the bullion van vehicle was able to escape. But his vehicle destroyed other people’s vehicles packed in the area. Those vehicles were completely damaged but we thank God the driver was safe. They thought the bullion van was carrying cash. They were going back to Owerri, after their delivery”, it was reported.

The Imo state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Micheal Abttam, in reaction to the incident said “Sketchy information revealed that the bullion van was returning after delivering money and was attacked by hoodlums. The driver on noticing it tried to escape unfortunately, his vehicle capsized. No money was carted away.”
