Australia on Thursday, July 9, 2020, extended the visas of around 10,000 Hong Kongers living in the country by five years following China’s security crackdown on the territory.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said a pathway to Australian permanent residency would also be offered to Hong Kong citizens currently in the country on student or temporary work visas.

They will have the opportunity to apply for permanent residency after that period. It is understood the changes will affect about 10,500 students, and 1,500 people on other relevant visas, most of whom are already in Australia.
