No fewer than 37 persons have died in an auto crash that occurred on Tuesday along the Damaturu-Maiduguri Road in Borno State.

The accident was said to have occurred as a result of a collision between two Hummer buses and one Golf saloon car in the early hours of the day.

It was gathered that the tyre of one of the Hummer buses coming from the opposite direction busted resulting in the collision, while the Golf car which was coming behind at a very high speed ran into the two buses already on fire.

The Zonal Commanding Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps in charge of Borno, Yobe, and Bauchi states, Rotimi Adeleye, confirmed the incident to newsmen via a telephone conversation.

“A fatal crash occurred this morning along Maiduguri-Damaturu Road very close to a village called Jakana.  Two Hummer Buses and one golf saloon were involved and so far, 37 persons have been confirmed dead and most of them burnt beyond recognition,” he said.

Adeleye explained that the Federal Road Safety Corps and fire service had deployed their men for the rescue mission and had also liaised with the Borno state Commissioner of Police to obtain a court order for a mass burial of the victims burnt beyond recognition.

He advised motorists to ensure they obey traffic rules and drive at a low speed, especially where there are potholes.
